Burn out// Paraffin wax Sculpture

Image
BURN OUT Overworking myself is something I tend to be good at. I fill my time with too many tasks and events. To always make it work but in the end, I have no time left to take care of myself. This past summer I allowed myself to have a month of peace. Only taking on small jobs here and there and saying no to plans with friends. I had come to the realization that I didn’t know how to and didn’t enjoy being alone. I love chaos and energy. I have a lot of it to give so sometimes it’s just nice being surrounded by it too. After allowing myself the month to breathe and be still. I’ve learned to love alone time. Finding peace in the day and prioritizing myself.  When overworking yourself you lose more and more of who you truly are. A tint and haziness covers your true self. Think of a car when the wiper blades get old and are no longer capable of clearing off your windshield. It becomes more and more difficult to see out the window. Ultimately ending in a bad accident. If you don...

Mass Consumption

Image
Assignment #1 Working with wood      What inspired this piece is my obsession with banana bread. Silly but, yes. I wanted this assignment to push myself. Work with more fluid movement in my sculpture, rather than a stiff cubic wood structure. I used only glue to hold together my piece. I am using a running brick placement to layer the individual components of wood. It may not be obvious when you first see this sculpture, yet the reason for that method of assembly is to make note of the international trade that bananas partake in. They are a highly demanded product that is outsourced from another hemisphere. Traveling to another place to be eaten by many. Hence the title “Mass Consumption”. The individual pieces of wood represent all of the places that consume the fruit. The number of pieces of wood used isn’t an accurate percentage of consumers, but you get the idea. The reason for tinting the wood was a subtle showing of the aged banana look.

Bust Sculpture 2 (Keyboard Bust)

Image
Keyboard bust  I created this bust with the intention to focus on cyberbullying. Bullying is such a common thing amongst all ages. However, online bullying is more accessible. Adults bully adults, kids bully kids and even adults bully kids and vice versa. Online bullying is sadly so much easier to do. If you choose to be unknown you can be. The reasoning for all the random pasted newsprint letters over the bust is the words that people are using to label that being. They're using their words to identify that person. The backside of the bust has a keyboard in place of the brain. The person who's being bullied in this piece is also someone who is bullying others. The colour pink that coats the inside of the head is to represent that this is human flesh at the end of the day. Be mindful of what you say and who you say it.

Bust Sculpture 1 (FISH HEAD)

Image
Fish head I created this clay sculpture to visualize what pollution can do to our environment. We all talk about “saving the turtles” and whatnot about straws. There is so much more than straws and turtles. Plastic bags, linings of soda cans, animals being strangled and trapped in our creations. It is frustrating to see how we constantly continue to just overrule and take things that were here before us. Land, sea, and the atmosphere. When will it stop? We need to realize it won't get any better. The lame excuse of, “Well I’ll just get a plastic bag because it is already made and here in the store”. A terrible mindset because the more you think that way, well then you're just giving the creators more of a reason to produce it if you keep buying it. The solution is to simply stop getting the product to cut back their profit.  I choose a plastic bottle because they are just handed out like candy is to kids. We don’t always see where our trash ends up. This piece is to visualize...

Gregors Room

Image
Artist Statement:      The small sculpture constructed of paper, water, and inks make up a scene from a novel written by Franz Kafka. The title of the book, Metamorphosis tells the story of a salesman Gregor Samsa. He wakes up one morning to find himself inexplicably transformed into a huge insect. He struggles with this new adjustment. Rightfully so considering he is now a large bug that society could never accept. This book is rather sad and gloomy. When reading back over the book I feel an overwhelming shadow over me. Trapped in his room, scared to be seen by his family. We spend most of the time in his room while reading the book. While reading you don’t get the impression that his room is decorated or as much light in the room. Maybe a lamp and a single-window but, the window is covered with a blind not allowing in much light. I feel that most if not all furniture and minimal decorations that are in the room are there due to his parents' choice of placement. N...

Touch Response #2

Image
What Is Touch 5.5 x 8 Collage "A little pressure produces a flurry of excitement, then fades, and a stronger pressure just extends the burst of activity." Touch chapter page 81. "A Natural History Of The Senses" Diane Ackerman. Stimulation. We do things most of the time because we get something from them. We find joy in the little things. Movement gets us feeling excited and capable. Something as simple as dancing keeps the excitement in our bones going. When we lose feeling in something that used to give us the joy we find something new. Or we overdose on what we already have. Inevitably ruining the joy in it.

Touch Response #1

Image
Easing Pain 5 x 7.5 Collage in a glass frame "Shifting your attention to something else will distract you from your pain; pain requires our full attention." Touch chapter page 105. "A Natural History Of The Senses" Diane Ackerman. We feel everything so deeply and honestly. We can easily hide how we feel. We can choose to do so to protect ourselves. We can distract ourselves to help with pain and distract ourselves from feeling emotions. Sometimes it's easier to not feel. To invest ourselves in other activities takes away that pain just for a little until we get back to reality.

A Few of My Favorite Things

Image
  1.  Paint Pallet: This very messy pallet of watercolour paint holds a lot of growth. I've had this for over two years now. Shockingly has lasted this long. I've created so many artworks using this pallet. Given so many handmade cards and letters using these colours. It also is beautiful to look at how the paint slowly diminishes over the progression of my art being produced. 2. The coconut with coaster: The coconut I found one of my last nights back home before moving up to school. My best friend MJ and I have a deep love for coconuts. To make a long story short, a ship called the Providencia wrecked onto palm beach island. It was full of coconuts. They all scattered up the Palm Beach coast planting themselves. Not only is it tasty it reminds me of home and where I am rooted. The coaster I've had for years and reminds me of my mom. 3. "DINK COFFEE": Self-explanatory. I love coffee.  4. The Incense matches: Scented coconut... of course. My mom is a yoga teache...

Art 21 Response: Adam Milner

Image
The artist that caught my eye was Adam Milner .  https://art21.org/watch/new-york-close-up/adam-milner-takes-care-of-the-details/ Keywords: Vibrant matter, trash, arranging. Collecting. Temporary complex. “A lot of these philosophies are about getting rid of things, but I’m really interested in this idea of vibrant matter…that everything is active and when we’re done with something, it still exists in the world.” Artwork 1:  Source:  https://adammilner.com/contamination/remains Focal Point/ Emphasis: To combine personal items from Adam Milner's life and Andy Warhol's. "Ambiguously mingled" (This piece caught my attention on many levels but, one being that it is connected to Warhol and displayed in the Warhol Museum) Asymmetry: At first glance, the objects laid look placed in a neatly aligned manner. Which yes, they are neatly aligned but, they are by no means laid out to reflect on the side perfectly. Still accomplishing a visual appeal with the confusion tha...
